In Memory of Mr Donald Hale
“A True Gentleman”
1921 – 2009
Don’s Coaches was established by Mr Don Hale 63 years ago. Don was born on the 4th April 1921 and his life always revolved around transport. During the Second World War Don served with the Essex Yeomanry where he was given the job of vehicle driver as part of their transport division. He was a veteran of the Normandy Landings. On leaving the army Don started to run his own taxi business with two secondhand Packard cars from the petrol station he ran in nearby Takeley. He then purchased his first coach, a second hand Duple Bedford OB. After this acquisition Don’s Coaches grew from strength to strength. He then moved premises to North Street Great Dunmow from where he operated the business and kept the increasing number of coaches.
In 1973 Don purchased the old timber yard at Parsonage Downs in Great Dunmow to keep the coaches and run the ever increasing business. Don’s Coaches still operate from here to this very day. Don passed away in 2009.
People who knew Don quickly discovered why he was often described as “a true gentleman”. He was generous, kind and loved animals. Without Don’s dedication, hard work, enthusiasm and passion for life, Don’s Coaches would not be here today.
His legacy will always remain with the people he met, the people he employed and also within the industry as a whole.
